Mangrove Snapper at Sebastian Inlet

Mangrove snapper — gray snapper — are everywhere around Sebastian Inlet, and they are considerably smarter than their size suggests. In clear water they will follow a bait, look at it, and refuse it.

Captain Richard Ladrew uses them to keep a trip moving. When the tide is wrong for snook or the wind has the flats churned up, the snapper are still there, still biting, and everyone catches fish.

They are also excellent eating, which makes them one of the better fish to fill a cooler with when the bigger species are closed or uncooperative.

Where Captain Richard Finds Them

Anywhere hard and shaded. The inlet jetty rocks, bridge pilings, dock structure, mangrove roots and the nearshore reefs and wrecks just outside the inlet all hold snapper.

On the full day inshore and nearshore trip, Captain Richard runs outside to the reefs where the snapper average noticeably bigger than the ones inside the lagoon.

Best Time of Year

Mangrove snapper are catchable all year and best from June through October, when warm water brings them onto the structure in numbers and the bigger fish move in from offshore.

How Captain Richard Fishes for Mangrove Snapper

• Live shrimp or small live baitfish on a light fluorocarbon leader. In clear water, the lighter the leader, the more bites you get — this is a fish where going down a size genuinely matters.
• Chumming to bring them up and get them competing is often the difference between picking at them and catching them steadily.
• Free-lining a bait back into the structure with no weight at all is Captain Richard’s approach when the water is clear and the fish are fussy.

Current status: Open year round — 10″ minimum, within the snapper aggregate

• In Atlantic state waters the minimum size is 10″ total length.
• The bag limit is 5 per person, counted within the 10-snapper aggregate bag limit across all snapper species.
• The season is open year round.
