The problem with most team building is that it is obviously team building. Everybody knows what the exercise is for, and everybody performs accordingly. A boat does not have that problem. The water is just the water, nobody is pretending, and by hour two the quiet one from accounts is the one netting everyone else’s fish.

We run private team days out of Sebastian Inlet, twenty minutes from Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach and a short run from Palm Bay and Melbourne. Private means your group and the captain, nobody else on the boat. Our boat takes six; for a bigger team we run two or three boats together with partner captains, so eighteen people can be on the same water on the same morning.

Three Formats That Work

The Fishing Day

The one that does the most work. A half day inshore for snook, redfish and trout, with rods, bait, licences and cleaning included. Nobody needs to have fished before — most people on these trips never have, which is the point. It levels the room faster than anything you could design, because seniority is worth nothing to a fish.

The Sandbar Day

Better for a mixed group, or one where not everyone wants a rod in their hand. We run out to a sandbar or one of the spoil islands and anchor in clear water a few feet deep — people wade, swim, hunt shark teeth, and actually talk to each other. The Sandbar Charter is four hours; Island Hopping adds more stops and a full-day option.

The Sunset Finish

If the team is working through the day, the Sunset Tour leaves at 4pm and puts everyone on flat water for the last hour of light, usually with dolphins feeding. It is the easiest four hours to sell to people who were not sure they wanted to come.

Running Several Boats Together

This is the part most operators on this coast cannot do. One boat takes six, so a team of fifteen is normally three separate bookings on three separate days — which defeats the purpose. We run two or three boats together with partner captains instead: same water, same plan, anchored side by side at the sandbar or spread out along the fish.

It also gives you the only team building mechanic that has ever actually worked on a boat, which is boat against boat. Most fish, biggest fish, first fish — pick one, and the radios do the rest. Each boat is priced as its own trip, so a twelve-person day is two half-day charters.

Timing: half days run 8–12, 12–4 and 4–8. Weekdays are the easiest days to get two or three boats lined up together; summer and holiday weekends book out first.

Drinks: bring your own beer and seltzer, cans only, no glass, no hard liquor. Water and ice are a good idea too; it is Florida.

What to bring: sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, towels, a cooler, water shoes if you want to get off at the sandbar. There is shade on the boat and none on the sandbar.

Paperwork: tell us what your finance people need on the booking and we will sort it out when you book.

Where Your Team Is Coming From

Sebastian Inlet is about twenty minutes from Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach, half an hour from Palm Bay and Melbourne, and under an hour from Cocoa Beach and the airport. We send the exact meeting point when you book. If the team is in town for a few days, there is more to do on the Vero Beach and Sebastian Inlet guides.

Plan Your Team Day

Tell Captain Richard Ladrew your headcount and the dates you are looking at, and he will tell you what he can put together. He is on the water most days and gets back to you the same day. A $100 deposit per boat holds the date and comes off the total.
